The University of Utah knows that prospective transfer students have many choices of institutions to attend. We want you to be sure that U is the best choice for you.  Doing some research on the U’s website is a great first step but most students will also benefit from an actual visit to our campus.

 

The University of Utah’s Welcome Center holds special campus visits just for transfer students twice each month.  Visits include:

• ·         Scholarship and Financial Aid Information
• ·         Q and A with a general transfer advisor

Major Exploration Open Houses

The Major Exploration Program at the U of U would like to invite all exploring transfer students (both prospective and currently-admitted students) to their Spring 2017 Open Houses on the U of U campus. 

U Explore Open Houses bring together majors, minors, and extra-curricular activities related to particular career paths.  They provide a great way to meet advisors, faculty, students and alumni from a variety of exciting U of U programs, and we’ll feed you lunch!

Transfer Student Spotlight

Jose Morales Diaz

Jose is a transfer student from Salt Lake Community College. He was born in Mexico but grew up in Salt Lake City.  Ever since high school he knew that he wanted to attend the U of U. He liked its reputation as the “flagship institution” of Utah and considered it the best university in the state.

Jose is majoring in Communication at the U.  He selected this major because it fits his interests and gives him skills that he hopes to use in his future profession.

One of the most meaningful experiences that Jose has had at the U has been working as a peer mentor for the Diversity Scholars Program in the Office of Equity and Diversity.  In this role he advises prospective and current transfer students. He also tables at various transfer events across the city and is a Teaching Assistant in the Diversity Scholar’s class. Jose has learned some incredible skills in his peer mentor role including speaking in front of large audiences and creating educational videos. He has also participated in a variety of other extracurricular experiences at the U. He has collaborated with a professor on a research project, has been a member of several national honor societies, and has attended a variety of national and international conferences.

Jose’s only regret is that he didn’t apply for more scholarships during his time at the U. He urges other transfer students to start looking into U or U scholarships in January or February of the year they plan to transfer.

He also advises transfer students to get involved on campus. He suggests finding clubs or an on-campus job as ways to build their resume and start developing valuable networks. He also suggests visiting the Career Services office early and often - http://careers.utah.edu/.  This office helps students develop a resume, use LinkedIn, sharpen networking skills and get a job after graduation.

Jose also strongly suggests that students get to know a Student Success Advocate during their first semester.  Student Success Advocates are academic “life coaches” who help U students deal with problems and achieve their educational and life goals: http://studentsuccess.utah.edu/advocates-home/.

Jose is committed to education and its transformational role in people’s lives. He loves the university environment and plans to go on for a graduate degree. He would like to eventually work in higher education.

Build Your Resume at the U of U

Everyone knows how important a resume showing an impressive list of skills and experiences are for students entering the workforce or a graduate program for the first time.

As a transfer student, you will have less time to take advantage of all the many resume-building experiences that the U of U has to offer you. You need to get working on this ASAP!

The Transfer Center recognizes your need for speed and has come up with an accelerated resume-building timeline for transfer students. It’s on the Transfer Center website and it’s called “Hit the Ground Running”.  Check it out!

Don’t Forget the Enrollment Deposit!

Did you get admitted to the U?  Congratulations! Don’t forget to pay your enrollment deposit!  Every student admitted to the U. is required to pay a $300.00 enrollment deposit to confirm their intent to attend. This deposit goes toward their first semester’s tuition.

Until you pay this deposit you will not be able to sign up for an orientation; register for classes; or have your transfer work posted on your U of U record, so get this taken care of as soon as possible!

Before paying the deposit you must set up your U of U online account (called your CIS account) using the UNID sent to you in your acceptance letter. Go to the U’s home page www.utah.edu and click on the “CIS” link to get started. Once this is done, you can pay the deposit online.

Students with extenuating financial circumstances may qualify for an exemption from the enrollment deposit (called an “extension”). Find out more about situations in which a student can request an extension: http://admissions.utah.edu/deposit/.

Delays in paying your enrollment deposit will slow down your ability to get started at the U of U, so take care of this important first step immediately after your acceptance.

Apply Now for Spring 2017

Are you thinking of transferring to the U of U for Spring 2017?  If so, then apply now! 

The official application deadline for Spring Semester is November 1st, but don’t wait until then to apply. Registration for Spring Semester 2017 classes will begin in November and popular classes can fill up very quickly. Processing of applications can take several weeks, and following acceptance you must attend an orientation session before you can register for any classes.  If you apply for Spring Semester now, your application should be processed in time to get into the classes you want to take.

Here is what you need to do:

1- Fill out your application online

2- Pay your application fee 

3- Send transcripts from all colleges and universities from which you have credit

4- Use the Admissions Application Tracking System to follow what is going on with your application

5- Once accepted, you will need to pay a $150.00 enrollment deposit to hold your place at the U. This deposit will go toward your first semester’s tuition
